Tarsi Tanghe, Mobility Project Director, EANDIS

A mobile technology project between Eandis and Ores will go live on January 1st. Already in the pilot stages with 120 operational users, ranging from maintenance to service engineers the project will gradually rise to 2,100. The technology will incorporate scheduling and optimizing applications, order handling, logistic handling, assets and GPS applications, all integrated into the companies ERP system. In addition also GIS and corporate intranet is made available. In this session Eandis will provide a frank summary of the business and technical lessons learned and why they would advise you to take small but calculated steps to achieve the technology stability that will guarantee your project is a success.

Handheld: Ruggedness
What does rugged mean? From a user perspective, rugged is really just the computer's ability to keep operating under all exposed working conditions. And not just once, but for the life of the unit, which can easily be 3-5 years. However, depending upon the kind of work being performed, what is rugged for one user may not be rugged for another. For example, a mobile computer in a warehouse is likely to be dropped often and may be exposed to a lot of dust, but is unlikely to face extreme temperatures or rain. On the other hand, a forester will need a unit with protection against water and a wide temperature spec, but is probably not too concerned about dust.

Handheld: Total Cost of Ownership
The Magic of TCO Buying a cheaper mobile computer for more money. When going out to purchase new mobile computers, most businesses may be tempted to base buying decisions solely on a product's purchase price. But because the purchase price does not reflect the real cost of the unit, this could turn out to be a costly mistake. To truly evaluate what a product costs, we need to look at the cost over the life of the product. This is known as the product's total cost of ownership (TCO).

Ventyx Whitepaper: Field Force Transformation For The 21st Century
Utility, telecommunication and broadband companies with large and distributed field forces have long been adherents of utilizing the latest mobile technologies to improve customer service and increase worker productivity. In North America alone, over 80% of such companies have in the last ten years deployed some form of field force automation, or workforce management, to selected parts of their field service organizations. The results of these efforts have been striking, with most organizations experiencing a return on investment period of two years or less. Automation alone, however, is not the only possible response to these many challenges posed by operating in the 21st century:

  • Consumer and commercial customer demand for increased responsiveness and service in the field
  • The need to drive costs out of the Distribution and Field Service business by achieving greater workforce productivity
  • Toughening compliance requirements set by national, state and local regulators
  • The dual threat of an aging distribution infrastructure supported by an aging workforce
  • Fragmentation of existing technologies in silos organized by the type of field worker they support and kind of field order executed
  • The need for enterprise-wide process and technology standardization that transcends disparate, less efficient regional or organizational structures and processes.
