The UK’s largest utility and home services provider, British Gas, has selected WANdisco to reinforce their Big Data deployments for live customer-facing operations.

British Gas opted to select WANdisco, a leading provider of continuous-availability software for global enterprises, to meet the challenges of Big Data, by significantly scaling up its Non-Stop Hadoop for Hortonworks solution.

This solution, which is built on HDP (Hortonworks Data Platform), involves WANdisco and Hortonworks working together to deliver 100% uptime with performance scalability for global enterprises using HDP across multiple data centres.

Since piloting their first instance of the solution in early 2014, British Gas has been able to capture real-time data from over a million household smart metres. The pilot established that British Gas could make considerable savings in data storage and processing, whilst minimising the risk of data loss or downtime.

British Gas has also been able to match substantial energy supply with demand, on a 24-by-7 basis, by leveraging real-time analytics from a ‘Connected Homes’ programme. This makes it easier for both business and residential customers to take grater control of their energy use. Customers are able to control aspects of their energy output, like heating and hot water, remotely from their mobile devices, which is all tracked by the provider’s systems.

In addition, British Gas equip all their smart metre engineers with mobile devices, allowing real-time access to vital data and information to boost efficiency and accuracy whilst working in the field, which comprises over one million homes fitted with smart metres in the UK.

Non-Stop Hadoop for Hortonworks will now move into live production, with the amount of data under management scaled up to more than twice its original level.
