The International CES 2015: Top 3 Enterprise Announcements So Far

Among the madness of the Consumer Electronics Show taking place this week in Las Vegas, during which a myriad of exciting new gadgets, televisions, cars and other fun products are brought to the masses, it is always interesting to look for the products which could play a role in the workplace.

The line between consumer and enterprise mobile technologies is not as clear as it used to be, and each year the companies which steal the headlines at CES often have something to say about how their solutions can also be applicable to businesses.

We’ve picked out three 2015 releases so far which will be relevant and valuable to the enterprise across a variety of different fields and use cases.

1. A Range of Enterprise Applications for the Epson Moverio BT-200 Smart Glasses

Epson showcased the power of its Moverio BT-200 smart glasses, for augmented reality experience, with a number of powerful and effective enterprise applications from a variety of developers.

Harnessing the unique capabilities of the Moverio BT-200 platform, Epson demonstrated new industrial applications that provide workers with greater efficiency and safety measures.

The Moverio BT-200 offers an advanced wearable technology experience, optimised for augmented reality applications. Micro projectors located on each side of the lens project transparent overlays of digital content directly in the user’s field of view over the real-world environment.

Some of the enterprise applications which could have an impact include an advanced manufacturing aide using augmented reality to help coordinate and execute activities shop floors; a tool for pilots to help with inflight navigation, traffic, terrain visualisation, weather, and airspace information with access to vital safety procedures and protocols; an augmented reality display for field maintenance and technician training; as well as a platform for developing apps for business scenarios where hands-free, in-context, real time information is needed.

2. OpenPeak Upgrades Mobile Enterprise Management Console to Aid IT Administrators

OpenPeak Inc. announced the latest software release of its Mobile Enterprise Management platform for corporate IT administrators. Among the improvements in the release is an improved administrative console, featuring job scheduling tools, a more streamlined user interface, and numerous other additions that simplify and accelerate the execution of management tasks.

OpenPeak’s Mobile Enterprise Management platform coordinates the management of company-liable mobile devices, as well as enterprise apps, voice and data services on employees’ personal mobile devices. The platform delivers the highest levels of security, while remaining easy to use via its web-based administrative console.

3. Augmented Reality for Enterprise Applications from InfinityAR and Lumus

Infinity Augmented Reality Inc. and Lumus also introduced a new range of enterprise-grade augmented reality applications, demonstrating the disruptive potential of augmented reality combined with see-through display glasses in the workplace.

While acknowledging that the applications for professional markets are vast, the demonstration focused primarily on medical sample use cases. Using the Lumus glasses, viewers of the demos witnessed augmented medical information and skeleton imaging from a doctor’s point of view, superimposed on a patient.

The value of such capability to an operating room doctor, for example, include the ability to intuitively and more precisely present critical medical information while avoiding the need to avert the physician’s eyes from the patient. This could be a huge leap forward in the field of mHealth.
