Cloud Is Steering The Digital Transformation Journey
As digital transformation continues to envelope the enterprise, some technology needs aren’t exactly moving as quickly as the headlines would tell you, while mainstays are becoming more important than ever to keep up with the industry competitors.
Enterprise Mobility Exchange recently released its Industry Insight 2017: The State of Enterprise Mobility report, diving into the needs of SMBs and large corporations alike. The report uses survey data and interviews with analysts and thought leaders to better understand where IT stands in business today, and where it plans to be tomorrow. When asked what the top three needs were in 2017, IT executives were sure to put one key piece of technology above the rest: cloud. Forty-six percent of survey IT professionals from around the world said their enterprise was in need of cloud services this year, topping a list of more than a dozen other choices.
“The new consumption model of cloud is driving IT’s working and priorities,” said ESG Senior Analyst Mark Bowker. “The power of cloud to scale, to have access to resources, makes it a necessity. For instance, IoT isn’t any good until information is collected and analyzed; and that takes place in the cloud.”
Bowker also eluded to the notion that age of the enterprise plays a large part in its willingness to adopt cloud technologies.
“Companies that have been in business less than 10 years have a stronger appetite for the cloud, while those that have been around longer don’t,” he said. “It also has a lot to do with the decision-maker; millennials are taking on stronger roles at companies in positions that are essentially born in the cloud.”
Young or old, cloud approach plus migration is no easy task, hence the trepidation – just 19% of survey respondents admitted to actually fully implementing their cloud strategy (whether it was public or private, hybrid, multi or otherwise). There’s plenty to consider when cloud becomes an option for the company, like seeking out test environments, pricing, variations of different platforms, and so on.
What separates cloud from other technologies, however – and likely why it’s still a top priority for so many IT executives – is its anytime, anywhere capability. In a growing mobile world of business, the ability to always be connected, share, store, and download is now a necessity. That’s all done with cloud.
Cloud isn’t a be all, end all, either. It comes with its own peripheral needs, such as security and application management. As previously reported by Enterprise Mobility Exchange, cloud-based security is booming, as the need for email security, web security, and Identity and Access Management (IAM) are fueling a 21% CAGR in that market from 2016 to 2017.
