Fast Facts: R.I.P. Productivity. Cause Of Death: Too Many Apps
In the fast-paced IT industry, new statistics and data are released daily. Each week, Enterprise Mobility Exchange publishes Fast Facts, taking a look at interesting or noteworthy information impacting businesses.
A funny thing happened on the way to mobile transformation. IT teams and administrators were implementing every bell, whistle, gadget, and functionality possible in order to best equip employees for seamless, exponential productivity. And before they knew it, workers’ were overloaded with just too many options.
That’s the basis of a new survey released by RingCentral, including insight from more than 2,000 workers in the U.S., UK, and Australia. Plain and simple: all these new apps are actually killing productivity, not helping it.
The first data point that sticks out is jaw-dropping: the average worker is using four different communications apps, with 20% saying they’re using six or more. Because of that, 69% of those surveyed say they’re wasting up to an hour – 60 whole minutes of work time – just navigating between their communications apps, which accounts for 32 days in a calendar year.
Other poignant notes from the study:
- More than 70% of workers say their communications volume is a challenge to getting work done
- 68% of workers toggle between apps up to 10 times an hour; and 31% say toggling causes them to lose train of thought
Let there be no mistake, mobile applications are the future of necessary, business-critical workflows. Harnessing the true needs and how they can be accomplished efficiently, however, is clearly the challenge.
Enterprise Mobility Exchange will be hosting a week’s worth of webinars on the topic from March 19 to March 23, with a separate app focus each day of the week. Find out more and register here.
